The majority of the population has heard – or at least heard of – Fun by this point in time, with their singles “We Are Young” and “Some Nights” both reaching the top 10 on the Billboard charts.
What far fewer people are familiar with is their debut album, “Aim and Ignite.” While their most recent release, “Some Nights,” is far more traditional – although still quite impressive, in my personal opinion – their first album has a much more interesting, progressive sound, characterized by a variety of different instruments.
My personal favorite off of the album, and one of my favorite songs overall, is “Barlights.” It’s one of those rare songs for me that’s just so uplifting and catchy that it can pull me out of a bad mood easily.
At its base, I see it as a sort of realization of being really happy with how your life is presently and just seeing a big future ahead, and just living life.
It starts out well as it is, but I think the best part of the song is the break about three-quarters of the way into the song, where the lead vocals cut off and a chorus build up along with brass instruments to the final chorus of the song, where the song declares, “And for the first time / in a long time / I feel alive.”
Through excellent – and interesting – instrumentation, as well as strong vocals, a good beat, and good lyrics, “Barlights” is just a great pick-me-up song. Definitely check it out if you’re looking for one of those, or if you’re just in a good mood and want something to match it.
